    Impact

The National Institute on Drug Abuse funded and reviewed early United States work on ibogaine as a possible treatment for opioid dependence, and its internal decision in the 1990s not to advance the compound into human trials is one of the most frequently cited turning points in its research history. Preclinical toxicology and neurotoxicity findings associated with that program continue to appear in contemporary reviews, and the institute remains a primary source of funding and published data for addiction pharmacology more broadly.
